These paper collages were created by first graders. They were inspired by “The Three Musicians”, a painting by Pablo Picasso. They studied Picasso’s use of shapes in his painting – especially the use of squares and rectangles. They then created their own versions complete with shiny musical instruments.

These paintings were created by second graders who were inspired by the work of Paul Klee. They noticed Paul Klee’s heavy use of bold lines and bright colors. Then they created their own paintings using black marker and tempera paint.

Third graders studied the animal paintings of artist Franz Marc – who often uses very vibrant, nonrealistic colors to paint animals. They also learned how to mix primary colors (red, yellow, and blue) to create secondary colors (orange, green, and violet) and intermediate colors (ex: yellow-orange). They created colorful animal paintings by combining what they had observed in Franz Marc’s paintings with their knowledge of mixing colors.

Fourth graders studied the work of Henri Matisse. They noted his use of dark, bold outlines, bright colors, and heavy patterns. They created these portraits using oil pastel and tempera paint. Inspired by Matisse, they also included bold outlines, vibrant colors, and patterns.
